More about Peru costs
Peru's national currency is the Nuevo sol, where in US $1 is 3.13 PEN (1.09 USD). Coins come in five, two, and one sol while bills are in 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 soles denominations. Be wary of suspicious looking notes or coins, particularly the 5.00 PEN (1.74 USD) coins since counterfeiting is rampant. Stores will confiscate counterfeit bills and damaged bills can only be exchanged in banks before they're useable.
A daily budget of about 60.00 PEN (20.91 USD) to 75.00 PEN (26.13 USD) is enough for a stay in a dorm room, set menu meals, and economy bus travel. Many restaurants offer three-course set lunches for 5.00 PEN (1.74 USD). Midrange comforts cost about 105.00 PEN (36.59 USD) to 225.00 PEN (78.40 USD) per day. High end hotels can cost hundreds in sol value, particularly in the expensive cities Lima and Cuzco. To maximize your expenses, split the budget between a fellow traveler and stay in double rooms. Hotels usually give discounts for students or special prices for promos or business rates.
