Sri Lanka Good to know |
Sri Lanka used to be a very rich kingdom, ruled by intelligent kings. They built dams and complex irrigation systems that supplied water in almost all parts of the country. Together with the crops, the country grew to prosperity, until the great kings died and soon it was invaded. India was the first to colonized Sri Lanka. Then the Tamils, until the strong and united country parted into three different kingdoms. This division led to the further loss. It was not a long time before the Portuguese came to conquer.
By the year 1636 Sri Lanka asked for the aid of the Dutch against the Portuguese. They won the battle but still not their freedom. After helping, the Dutch took the Portuguese people's place, but by 1796, they were over-thrown by the British army. The British ruled over the country until February 4, 1948, when the country achieved its independence.
