The Glossary
Taxi-brousses might be the cheapest available transport in Madagascar, but take note that these vehicles does not always come in the form of minivans as most guidebooks would tell you. In some more remote locations, like R7 or the Tana-Big Southern district, taxi-brousses come as big trucks overloaded with people. The trip is very bumpy and uncomfortable, so some travelers become sick after the trip that they cannot anymore enjoy the destination.
Oftentimes, these trucks are also slow because they carry loads of people, so travelers tend to be late in their schedules. Hence, most tourists who originally planned to take only taxi-brousses to save on transportation either end up abandoning half of their planned destinations or switching to a hired four-wheel drive.
To avoid these inconveniences from happening to you, do combination traveling. Switch from trains to taxi-brousses to four-wheel drives, and vice versa. Allow a flexible budget plan for changing into different modes of transportation.
