The Malagasy people are generally patriotic. When they received their independence from France, they restored much of their culture and languages to original traditions. Today, 98 percent of the Malagasy speak a language named after them. Nonetheless, English, French and German are also still being spoken by the people.
The Malagasy are mixed Austronesians and Africans. Their everyday lives revolve around fady (taboos), which vary from region to region, but is generally marked by ancestor worship.
