More about Egypt costs
A trip to Egypt isn't a burden on any budget, but admission fees and organized tours tend to increase spending. The country's official currency is the Egyptian Pound (E£), where one pound is equivalent to 100 piastres (pt). Bills come in 1.00 EGP (0.18 USD), 5.00 EGP (0.91 USD), 10.00 EGP (1.83 USD), 20.00 EGP (3.66 USD), 50.00 EGP (9.15 USD), and 100.00 EGP (18.30 USD) denominations. Small change is usually unavailable and working staff sometimes frown if you pay in 100.00 EGP (18.30 USD) notes. To avoid unhappy service persons, cash out your large bills in upscale places. Budget travelers can survive on 100.00 EGP (18.30 USD) daily while pricier accommodations cost about 1,000.00 EGP (183.00 USD) and up per night. Midrange rooms and modest meals will cost a daily budget of 150.00 EGP (27.45 USD) to 250.00 EGP (45.75 USD) daily. The midrange budget already includes sightseeing. Students with a valid International Student Identity Card (ISIC) can take advantage of admission fee discounts.
Tipping is the norm for everyone who serves you. Don't be surprised if the locals ask for baksheesh (small change) from you. Guides expect a tip of 25.00 EGP (4.57 USD) to 30.00 EGP (5.49 USD) daily while hotel bellmen expect 5.00 EGP (0.91 USD) to 10.00 EGP (1.83 USD). Taxi drivers only expect 10 percent of the metered fare if the fare is agreed in advanced. Restaurants charge 10 to 12 percent service charge but include a 5 to 10 percent of the bill as tip. Fast food restaurants don't expect any tip.
