The Glossary
Portillo, a famous ski resort in Central Chile, is where you can ride the world’s only va et vient or Roca Jack slingshot lifts that actually look like giant slingshots than chair lifts. There are slingshots for both professionals and beginners. Up to five people can cling on a giant T-bar while being dragged up a vertical slope at a great speed. The lifts run through steep pitches, in between rocky outcrops, and alongside rolling mountainsides. There are about 450 riders a day but the lifts never get crowded.
Unfortunately, you cannot ride the “slingshots” without paying the full entrance fee to the resort. The entrance fee costs $2030 per person and already includes seven nights of lodging, food and accommodations at the resort’s own hotel.
