Spanning over 400 years, Taiwan's history is as rich as its culture and geography. Leaping through history books, it may be found that the island's original settlers are actually Austronesians. Colonized by the Dutch in the 17th century, the country soon had mixed nationals. Then the Han Chinese people started migrating into the country and continued populating until most of the Taiwanese people have the Han Chinese features.
In 1662, the Dutch colonizers were defeated and the country enjoyed a period of freedom, which was shortened by the invasion of the Japanese. The Taiwanese people stayed under the wings of the Japanese people until the end of the Second World War. By this time, China, which used to ignore Taiwan, became the new colonizers of the Island. It governed until the democratic reforms were pushed forth. Today, the country is enjoying a liberal community.
