Morocco's local currency is the dirham (Dh or MAD), which comes in 10.00 MAD (1.27 USD), 20.00 MAD (2.54 USD), 50.00 MAD (6.35 USD), 100.00 MAD (12.69 USD), and 200.00 MAD (25.38 USD) denominations. One dirham is divided into 100 centimes. Local currency cannot be brought out of the country so dirhams can only be exchanged inside Morocco. The cheapest hotels start their prices at 65.00 MAD (8.25 USD) for single beds while youth hostels start their price at 50.00 MAD (6.35 USD).
Traditional cuisine dishes come at inexpensive prices. Restaurants offer variations of the tagine, a spicy stew of meat and vegetables at a minimum price of 25.00 MAD (3.17 USD). There are many rotisserie chicken shops in the area, serving these with fries and salad for about 20.00 MAD (2.54 USD). Sandwhiches come cheaper at about 10.00 MAD (1.27 USD) in very few establishments. Bargaining is common practice in local markets. Try haggling for a 50 percent discount from the original price. Starting prices are usually 50 times or even more of the original price.
