/ Asia / Indonesia / Java / Historical Spots / Prambanan

Located in Central Java, Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple in Southeast Asia. It has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is characterized by typical Hindu architecture such as tall and pointed spires. The central building rises 47 meters high.

It isn't sure who built the Prambanan. It was either Rakai Pikatan or Balitung Maha Sambu. What's sure is that the temple was built around 850 CE. After its construction was finished, the temple was abandoned a while later and it continued to deteriorate until 1918, when extensive renovations were done.

The Prambanan was severely damaged due to the 2006 earthquake in Java. Although the structure seems intact from the outside, significant damage was done on the inside. It has been closed to the public until complete assessment has been done as well as repairs.
