Angkots or minibuses are some of the most common means to get around in Indonesia. In using them, remember to keep the following in mind:
*Angkots are privately-owned so there are no uniform colors or any unifying theme to see in the minibuses other than being a decorated minibus.
*Don't be scared if you see an angot without doors as this is quite common.
*Angkots are usually overcrowded. A minibus for 10 people, for example, usually gets packed with 18 people.
*The safest and most comfortable seat is next to the driver at the front window.
*Make sure to always have coins or small bills in your pocket for paying in angkots. Pay only in cash. A one-way ride usually costs Rp 2.000 to Rp 5.000.
*Pickpockets are common in angkots. Be careful of a seatmate who is acting oddly or sick because chances are, this person is a thief.
*To make an angkot stop, just shout "Kiri!" (pronounced as Kee-ree). It means "left" in English since you are supposed to ask the driver to stop on the left side of the street.
