Anemogi Village, which is only a 10-minute walk from Wamena, is where you can arrange for a mock pig feast among the Dani tribes at any time of the year. You have to ask your guide to arrange the mock pig feast ahead of time so that the tribe will be ready when you arrive.
During the pig feast, you will be welcomed by the tribe’s chief, then you will be seated cross-legged in a compound filled with tribesmen in grass skirts and fully greased and painted bodies. You would find that the men are wearing a peculiar penis gourd called koteka, while women are wearing feather headdresses. They would then dance as if performing a mock battle.
After the dances, you will be invited inside the village chief’s house, wherein the chief would kill a pig right before your very eyes. After killing the pig, he will cook it in a conventional earth oven, along with greens and sweet potatoes. After about two hours, when the pig is already cooked, you will be feasting with the whole village.
After eating, the tribesmen would invite you to sing their traditional songs and after every song, the village’s chief would explain the song’s meaning.
