The Glossary
Other than the Pyramids in Giza and the felucca ride on the Nile river, visiting mosque is also a popular activity in Egypt. Most of the major mosques are open to the public (Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, El-Mursi Abul Abbas Mosque Al-Azhar Mosque) unless services and renovations are in progress.
When visiting one, keep in mind that this house of faith is different from that of a western church (e.g. Church of the Latter Day Saints or Catholic Churches). Before entering the place, be sure to remove your shoes. If you are uncomfortable being shoeless, you can always buy a canvas overshoes sold in the area for EGP1. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not the ideal garb when entering a mosque. Instead, it is best to wear pants (for men) and ankle-length skirts (for women).
