stelae - "a stone or wooden slab erected for funerals and/or commemorative purposes. They are usually decorated with the names and titles of the deceased or living — either inscribed, carved in bas, sunken or high relief or simply painted to the slab."
Another archeologists' haven for ancient Egyptian relics is Beni Hasan. A town in Upper Egypt, Beni Hasan receives a little trickle of visitors, although it may be a good choice for those studying or interested in archeology and history. To the east bank of Beni Hasan and Nile River is a vast necropolis of 39 cliff-hewn tombs and decrepit temples like the Speous Artemidos or the "Grotto of Artemis." Many of the tombs provide information about the unique forms of mortuary art used during Egypt's early Middle Kingdom. The tombs are colorfully painted with scenes of the royalties' daily life like the harvest of grapes and papyrus, as well as courtly music and dances.
