Humans started to settle in Ecuador since the 3500 BC. Each civilization that transpired from the country developed its own arts and culture.
The region became part of the Inca Empire in 1463. In 1531, the Spanish conquistadors under Francisco Pizzaro started to conquer the nation.
On October 1820, Guayaquil became the first city in Ecuador to become independent. In May 1822, the rest of Ecuador freed from Spain after Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spaniard Royalist forces.
Instability, a rapid succession of rulers, and wars with other countries led to the foundation of Ecuador's modern-day democracy.
