The earliest settlers
The very first inhabitants of Dominica are the Arawaks who were brought in by the currents of the Orinoco River. It was discovered by Columbus on a Sunday as reflected by the name he gave it. However, unlike other Caribbean islands, Dominica was not settled in by the Spanish. They said the place had no gold and wealth in any form may not be harvested from it.
The French claim
Since the Spanish government ignored Dominica, the French officials claimed it as their colony. The proximity between the two countries is also small, giving further advantage. However, because of a treaty signed to end the Seven Years War the country became a colony of the Brits.
The Brits
During the reign of the Brits the country experienced significant changes. Legislative assembly was established. This evolved from an all-white assembly to a hybrid one. However, this did not help the majority of the population. The white members of the assembly lobbied for rules in favor of their positions. This caused conflicts in the government.
Insurgence
The conflicts worsened into a series of insurgence led by people who believed that the Brits were taking advantage of the population as well the riches of the island. These rebellions resulted to the eventual liberty of the country, which the people enjoy until today.
