Algeria's traditional dishes are shaped by the history of the country. Some foods feature a Western flavor because the country was previously colonized. There are also instances when dishes are only made of meat because it is the only ingredient readily available.
Influenced by Berber, Arab, Turkish, and French cultures, Algerian cooking has a mild and at times spicy taste. Coastal towns have fantastic seafood dishes and a variety of specialty eateries to choose from. Travelers may order the national specialties like brochettes (kebabs) in baguettes topped with spicy sauce. They may also opt for couscous (semolina-like pasta from cracked wheat). Chickpea-cakes are also available as a side dish.
There is no alcohol in the country because of a religious ban but the country has its own line of good drinks to help the food glide down to the stomach. There are teas, sweet coffee, Lismara roses, and Mascara.
