A former region of the great kingdom of Persia, Uzbekistan's history is composed of life stories and experiences of the many different tribes who settled and lived in the country from the ancient times until today. There are Turkic tribes, the Mongols brought through the conquest of Gengis Khan, and finally the Uzbeks who invaded the territory in the 16th century. Together with the earlier settlers, the Uzbeks resisted against the Russians. However, the efforts were all in vain. The country was still conquered in the mid 19th century. The country remained under the wings of the Soviets until 1991 when they became fully independent. In the year 2001, the country allied with the US and UK to fight against Taliban and al-Qaeda who were believed to be behind the 9-11 incident. However, this alliance lasted only until 2005. The bases that were lent were immediately shut and US and UK troops were sent out of the country.
