More about United Arab Emirates costs
The United Arab Emirates' (UAE) official currency is the UAE dirham (Dh, AED), pegged at 3.86 AED to 1 US Dollar. Dirhams come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000. Coins are available at Dh1, 50 fils, 25 fils, 10 fils, and 5 fils. As long as the moneychangers do not charge commission, then their offered rate is just right. In fact, some moneychangers have better rates than banks. ATMs are usually found in shopping centers, major streets, and in some hotels.
Be aware of the municipal and service tax charged in each emirate, usually between 5 percent and 20 percent. Prices quoted as ‘net' include these tax and service charges. Hotel rates are rather pricey and rooms are difficult to come by in Dubai and Abu Dahbi. Tourist oriented attractions and establishments are expensive and a visit to the UAE is only advisable for high end travelers. However, with enough effort you'll find shared accommodations that charge reasonable prices.
