Biratnagar Information

/ Asia / Nepal / Eastern Terai / Biratnagar / Information

Though most would probably have never heard of it, Biratnagar is actually the second largest city in Nepal, after the capital Kathmandu. Ironically, it is the one which actually serves as the industrial hub of the country, with most of the manufacturing companies making their home in it. Surprisingly enough, it has been able to maintain a small-town atmosphere despite all the development, so one would find it refreshingly free of the "hustle and bustle" usually found in most major cities.

Biratnagar is most known for its successful, large scale jute industry, which was the first of its kind in Nepal. An excellent idea is to take a drive to the Baraha Chheta, a Hindu temple nestled between the Koka and Sapta Rivers. It is a popular pilgrimage site mainly because of the legend that the god Vishnu vanquished the evil demon Hirayankashyapu in the temple.

One can also take a look at the Biratnagar Haat Haat Bazaar, found in the city's eastern fields. It is a busy open market which convenes every Wednesday and offers a plethora of cheap and quality goods. However, the highlight of any trip to Biratnagar is the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, believed to be one of Asia's best examples of a wetland biome.

Formally established in 1976, it features a landscape dominated by marshes, mudflats, and lagoons that serves as home to an extensive collection of wildlife, especially a rich bird life that makes it one of the most beautiful bird sanctuaries in Asia. As it is a birdwatcher's paradise, one may go on leisurely nature walks through the park to experience its true essence. It is also advisable to make the visit during October through March, to take advantage of the fact that those are the months when various migratory birds flock to the area for a pleasant, noisy sojourn.
