Iran's official currency is the rial (IRR) but is usually quoted as toman. Rial notes come in denominations of 100.00 IRR (0.01 USD), 200.00 IRR (0.02 USD), 500.00 IRR (0.05 USD), 1,000.00 IRR (0.10 USD), 2,000.00 IRR (0.20 USD), 5,000.00 IRR (0.51 USD), 10,000.00 IRR (1.01 USD), 20,000.00 IRR (2.03 USD), 50,000.00 IRR (5.06 USD), 500,000.00 IRR (50.64 USD), and 100,000.00 IRR (10.13 USD). Written prices are in rials but prices in conversations are said in tomans. When shopkeepers quote their prices, they often omit the denomination high prices. If you're told something costs 2 tomans, it actually costs 2000 tomans or 20,000.00 IRR (2.03 USD). Inflation is rather high of 25 percent and with the recent outbreak of political violence, travelers are looking for someplace else to visit.
With 150,000.00 IRR (15.19 USD) to 200,000.00 IRR (20.26 USD) backpackers can stay in dorms or basic hotels, eat cheap food in local restaurants, and ride slowe forms of transportation. Midrange travelers will have to set aside 250,000.00 IRR (25.32 USD) to 400,000.00 IRR (40.51 USD) daily for more comfortable accommodation, chartered taxi rides, tourist attraction hopping, and at least one cooked meal. High end travelers will spend about 400,000.00 IRR (40.51 USD) to 500,000.00 IRR (50.64 USD) to eat at fine-dining restaurants, stay in a Western styled hotel and travel through Iran via domestic flights. Midrange to top end hotels charge about 700,000.00 IRR (70.90 USD) a day.
