Overview
Due to the geography of the country and the existence of plantations, the country's staple foods are rice and sugar cane. The abundance of these two products resulted to meals having rice as the main ingredient. A meal will never be complete without rice in Guyana. Aside from this, other ingredients of local dishes include seafood and animal products.
Popular dishes
Some of the popular dishes of Guyana are chicken in the ruff or Chinese style fried-chicken over fried rice, chow-mein, a Chinese style stir-fried noodle dish, and salara or the red cake.
Country beverage
The abundance of fruits and vegetables in the country was utilized by the people not only in their food but also in their beverage. Most national beverages originated from fruits and vegetables. These are mauby, which is made from tree barks, sorrel from the leaves of vegetables used in salads, and ginger beer, from ginger root.
