Ethiopia was historically called Abyssinia, derived from the Arabic name, Habesha.
Ethiopia's dynastic history began with Emperor Menelik I in 1000 BC. At its peak, the dynasty paved way to the renowned Aksumite Empire. In 1855, the country was reunited by Emperor Tewodros II, who ushered the country's modern history.
From 1936 to 1941, Italian forces tried to conquer the country, but this was foiled by the British and Ethiopian independence fighters.
By the mid 20th century, Ethiopia became a crossroads of international cooperation. It became a League of Nations member in 1923, and became one of the first original members of the United Nations in 1942. Today, Ethiopia is one of the richest nations in Africa.
