Unlike the rest of the world that uses the Julian or Gregorian calendar, Ethiopians use their own unique calendar, the Ethiopian Calendar, which dates back to the Coptic calendar of 25 BC. An Ethiopian year consists of 12 months, with 30 days for each month, plus a 13th month of five to six days.
The Ethiopian new year (Enkutatesh) begins on September 10 or 11 in the Gregorian calendar. It also lags seven to eight years behind the Gregorian version.
The time in Ethiopia is also six hours behind. Hence, while Gregorian time says midnight or noon is at 12:00, it means six o'clock for Ethiopians.
