Like most colonized countries, the culture of East Timor is a combination of the culture of its previous colonizers. Some Timorese people follow the catholic traditions of the Portuguese. Others are inclined to the Malay and Indonesian ways of life, while there are also ones who follow the culture of the Austronesians, the country's early settlers.
Aspects of the culture are also affected by the burning desire for freedom. Some pieces of literature have socio-political nature. The same goes with the country's music as well as the major festivals. The country's customs are mostly catholic as it is the predominant religion.
