The earliest settlers in Botswana was said to be Bantu-speaking people from the Katanga area. These people led a peaceful life until tension grew between them and the Ndebele tribes in the 19th century. This is further aggravated by the entry of the Boers from Transvaal. The fights only seized when the British acted as middlemen and placed the land under its protection.
In the year 1910, the Union of South Africa was established. It did not include Botswana. However, continued persuasion of British authority eventually led to the independence. The country was declared as self-governing in June 1964. The very first election for leaders took place, assuring the people of a carefully chosen president and constituents.
