More about Venezuela costs
Venezuela's national currency is the Bolivar fuerte (BsF). Since 2003 the BsF has had strict currency controls, making it difficult to convert within or outside the country. The official rate offered by banks is 2.15 VEF (1.00 USD) per US dollar but the Parallel market trades it for higher. Included in the "Parallel Market" are the tourist rate, the bonds brokerage, and the black market. Always avoid the black market since the rates are higher and dangerous. The tourist rate is the safest, offered by higher level members of the tourist industry. As of July 2009, the tourist rate is about 4.5 to the dollar.
The most expensive accommodations are 5-star hotels while other areas have guest houses and posadas (popular term for B&Bs). Be wary of midrange hotels as their beds are usually mattresses on concrete slabs. Budget travelers will spend about 40.00 VEF (18.60 USD) to 54.00 VEF (25.12 USD) (about $20 to $25), covering cheap rooms, inexpensive to midrange restaurants and bus travel. The average cost for budget rooms are between 10.00 VEF (4.65 USD) to 20.00 VEF (9.30 USD). More comfortable traveling costs about 70.00 VEF (32.56 USD) to 100.00 VEF (46.51 USD) daily with accommodations charging about 20.00 VEF (9.30 USD) to 50.00 VEF (23.26 USD) daily. The said rates are based on the official exchange rate between the Bolivar fuerte and US dollar.
