Lying atop the Khorat Plateau and bordered by the great Mekong River, the province of Sakhon Nakhon is well-known as the homeland of two of the most revered monks in Thailand. Supposedly attaining the highest state of arahant (enlightenment), the names of Ajahn Man Bhuridatto and Ajahn Fan Ajaro have lent considerable pride to the area. As it is, Sakhon Nakhon features a treasure trove of forest temples and monuments dotting most of its landscape. The most notable of these is the beautiful Wat Phra That Choeng Chum - Sakhon Nakhon's most sacred and revered temple.
