Early discovery
South Georgia's history is very recent as compared to other countries'. Due to the environment the country possesses, there had not been early inhabitants in the island. The place was very cold, snowy and mountainous. It was also gloomy, rough, and almost unlivable. It was only in the 16th century that the island was discovered. This was followed by a series of sovereignty claim, which was won by the Brits.
Recent History
By the entry of the twentieth an additional number of settlers came into the islands and inhabited it. Its economy started to rise and it became the world's largest whaling center. Due to these improvements surrounding countries, particularly Norway, started to appeal for the islands sovereignty. It claimed that the island rests within it territory.
