The Glossary
tole - "another term for chowk, the main square or intersection with a market, the focal point of directions given by maps and locals and the starting point from which to locate landmarks."
Kot Square is the venue of the infamous Kot Massacre. This was a bloodbath that occured in September 14, 1846 when a group of nobles attacked the Rana brothers. After the dust settled, all seven of the Rana brothers were wounded but they survived and were victorious. About 55 noblemen died.
Because of the events that transpired in Kot Square, the Shah Dynasty slowly lost their power and led to the creation of the Rana autocracy. The event also led to the total abolition of the Shah Dynasty in 2008.
It is worth noting that while celebrating the Durga Puja festival, hundreds of goats and buffaloes are sacrificed in Kot Square.
