Micronesians started to settle in their land about 4,000 years ago, following a decentralized system of chieftain, which later evolved into an economic and religious empire centralized on Yap.
Often called "The Venice of the Pacific," Nan Madol in Pohnpei used to be the seat of the once-powerful Saudeleur dynasty that united the island's 25,000 people from 500 to 1500 AD, before the empire collapsed.
The Portuguese, then later, the Spanish, who were looking for Indonesia's Spice Islands reached Micronesia in the 16th century. The Spaniards then established sovereignty over the islands. In 1899, Micronesia was sold to Germany, conquered in 1914 by Japan, before being seized during the Second World War by the United States.
On May 10, 1979, a constitution was ratified, forming the Federated States of Micronesia. From being an American trustee, Micronesia was granted independence on November 3, 1986.
