Kenya's history may be described as that having many years as an inhabited territory, but too little a time as an independent nation. Kenya underwent a number of occupations that caused for a long time under the wings of foreign rulers. It was first occupied by Imperial Germany in 1885, followed by BEAC or the British East Africa Company in 1888. The country remained under the rule of this company, without a single person representing the citizens in the council. Only in 1907 were the citizens represented in the legislative council. However, the foreign colonists still had more say on issues as regard the country. This resulted to a revolution that resulted to the declaration of a state of emergency. It lasted until December of 1959, when Kenya was finally declared independent and handed the freedom the people are enjoying ‘til today.
