Beige Fodeng, or the Lighthouse of Buddha when translated to English, was named as such by a former emperor. According to the legend, the emperor, while riding on his dragon boat, passed out. He was only awoken by the light coming from this lighthouse and he thought it must be Bodhisattva helping him. After this event, the emperor gave the lighthouse its current name.
The Beige Fodeng was constructed in order to remind people that they were in the Chaozhou area and to guide boats in the Hanjiang River. The water here is very dangerous and the lighthouse reminds the sailors to be careful.
