National Museum of Cambodia

/ Asia / Cambodia / Phnom Penh / Museums / National Museum of Cambodia

Officially, the National Museum of Cambodia found in its capital of Phnom Penh was opened in 1920. It was partly reconstructed in 1968. The museum holds more than 14,000 collections of sculpture, ceramics, bronzes and other historical artifacts which dates back even before the Khmer Empire. The museum fell into despair during the Khmer Rouge regime which lasted from 1975-1979. Phnom Penh was evacuated, hence the museum fell out of shape and was even ransacked. Also, many of the museum's original staff was killed by the Khmer Rouge. Today, the National Museum of Cambodia has been able to recover and now it manages its own collections as well as all the other museums in the country.
