Cambodian culture is largely based on the country's religion. While most are Khmer in nature, other beliefs and traditions reflect that of the Hindu and Buddhist religion. Customs still being observed to this day, like never touching a person's head with one' s feet, is an original Khmer practice, whereas the sampeah gesture (palms together in a prayer-like fashion while bowing slightly) is a respectful greeting similar to the Hindu Namaste.
Aside from customs and traditions, religious beliefs also ruled the world of Cambodian Art. The country's traditional music was a creative adaptation of ancient Khmer spiritual music. On the other hand, the dances originate from both Khmer and Thai culture. Even the festivals and national holidays of the country are for the most part religion-based. The Khmer New Year, the most important celebration in Cambodia originated from Brahmanism. This is a religion which the Khmer followed before Buddhism was practiced in the country. During a Khmer New Year celebration, people are allowed to throw water at each other. For a tourist who plans to come by the country during the celebration, better pack on some waterproof clothing and lots of towels.
