Aside from the wondrous Ankor Complex and other sights, there are other matters to be aware of before traveling to Cambodia. Travelers should note that "begging" seems to be a popular occupation in this country. In almost all of the tourist spots, children and sometimes adults clad in tatters come and ask for dollars. They should be ignored. At best try to get away as most of them are very persistent and irritating. Another popular occupation in this country is prostitution. Although they can be irresistible at times, visitors are advised to do to these ladies what should be done to the beggars. Decline their offer and stay away.
Other than the local beggars and prostitutes, people touring places, especially on foot, are instructed to stick to the tour route as land mines are scattered all over Cambodia. These are very old bombs planted on the ground during the civil war. Getting off the track and setting off one can be deadly. An additional concern that can be deadly is the avian flu. Some parts of Cambodia are contaminated with this disease. Travelers need be wary of these places and try to stay away.
