Cambodian history may be said to have started from the Funan Empire in the early third century. This empire, ruled by Fan Shih-man was followed by the Chenla, the first independent state developed. The third empire established in the country is the famous Khmer empire where the Kingdom of Kambuja ruled over large territories from the capital region, Ankor. This empire is also considered the golden age of Cambodia. Many developments in politics and culture took shape during the era under its leader. The country was also christened with its name Cambodia because of this Kingdom.
By the entry of 1618, the golden age of Cambodia was reversed to the dark ages. The vast territories have been lost to the kingdom and the new capital, Lovek has been conquered by the Thais. What ensued after this occupation were a series of colonization by other countries. The country gained back its independence only in 1955. However, the Cambodian people experienced war in 1970 and were under communist government. In 1975 they were finally freed. They established a democratic government and from then on are enjoying the perks of liberty.
