Bermuda was first discovered by the Europeans in the early sixteenth century, but nobody cared about the island just yet. It was only in by 1511 when the island was recognized and christened a name derived from the Spanish explorer Juan de Bermudez. Despite this, the very first colonists of Bermuda were not Spaniards. It was the Brits who came to occupy the island. Bringing in 60 settlers, the group built the capital St. George. What followed was the bringing in of slaves to work on the lands of the Brits, and a series of some inopportune and fortunate activity which finally led to what is known about Bermuda today. It is now a country ripe with tourism and with an economy booming from shipbuilding and maritime economy.
