Benin is generally divided into two areas, the south and the north. The south is mostly made up of the coastal plain, with fertile soil, while the north region includes the savannas and the semi-arid plateaus. Due to the difference in the type of territory, the cuisine of these two areas varied greatly, resulting to one country two distinctive identities in terms if cuisine. In the south, the chief ingredient is corn, while in the north yam is the popular cooking elements. Meat is quite expensive in this country. Thus, the foods are more on vegetables than on meat.
Some of the popular dishes best tried by tourists include poisson au gril. Though it doesn't sound very tempting, this is actually a good dish to try out. It is made up of grilled fish with plantains field in peanut oil. Another is mouton aux arachides, which is stewed lamb in peanut sauce usually served with rice. For dessert, the country offers flan au citron, which means lemon flan.
