Aruba was originally inhabited by an Arawak tribe who call themselves Caiquetios. They were the caretakers of the island until the Spanish colonizers arrived to conquer the riches of the island. They dubbed the place as Oro Hubo meaning there is gold there. However, these Spanish who declared that there was gold in the island eventually realized that they were wrong. They found no gold and their earlier mission to make it into another huge farm for their own advantage failed. Aruba had been too arid to become a plantation. Thus, they abandoned the island.
When the Dutch started to show interest to Aruba, the Spanish once again showed authority to the place. They pretended to have resisted the intentions of the Dutch but eventually, they handed over the island. For years subsequent to that, the country remained under the Dutch control and within these years, the gold that the Spanish were looking for, finally appeared. Mines popped and eventually the island was drained of gold.
However, this did not end the flourishing of the country's economy. The gold was replaced by black gold or oil. The country became a huge refinery as well as one of the hottest tourist destinations in the country. When the oil refineries closed in the latter years, the country remained one of the most beautiful places in the world, giving it a booming economy due to tourism.
