Antigua and Barbuda is an island that may symbolize how slavery may at times result to something positive. Its history began with Africans who were transported by European nationals to work in their enterprises. They were the early settlers, brought into the island by Sir Christopher Codrington in the year 1684. They served as the farmers for the sugar enterprise, Codrington began in the island and current inhabitants are descendants of these original settlers. However, the people are not the only contribution of Codrington to the country. Due to his sugar plantations, the island of Antigua flourished and gradually secured itself a strong economy in the early days. It was one of the best producers of sugar worldwide. Today, old sugar mills may have been replaced by bars, offices, and homes, but the spirit of the past remains with the people.
