Anguilla's first settlers had been Amerindian tribes from South America. However, according to various sources, it has been sighted by Columbus in the year 1493, and discovered by France in 1564. Its name was derived from the word "eel" because of it eel-like shape.
For many years of its existence, the island had been peaceful and quiet, until the English settlers started to colonize it in the year 1650. Anguilla went under the administration of Great Britain and remained such until the early 19th century.
Today, Anguilla remains in history books no longer as an island under the British protectorate, but an independent nation, frequently visited by tourists.
