The Glossary
The Sanam Luang in Bangkok is a very important place in the country. This open space has been used for various celebrations, festivals and ceremonies by the royal family since the days of King Rama I. It has also seen a number of cremation ceremonies of members of the royal family.
Today, the 30 acre Sanam Luang or the Royal Fields is still used for ceremonies and celebrations, most notably the ritual bathing of monks during the time of Songkran and the Royal Ploughing Ceremony which by the king to signal the opening of rice season in May. Aside from ceremonies and other ritual gatherings, the Sanam Luang is used by the public for several purposes as well such as strolling, jogging, playing football, concerts, rallies and other such activities.
