The City Center of Singapore serves as the beating industrial and financial heart of the country that stands as one of the wealthiest in the world. Pulsating with skyscrapers, hotels, shopping centers, and convention facilities, it is definitely a bustling metropolis offering a little bit of everything.
A visit is usually accompanied by a lovely ride on the so-called "bumboats," traditional boats that once carried cargo during the country's early years. One may very well remember to head to the Fort Canning Park, the place where the famed Sir Stamford Raffles built his government house, and a military command center established during the infamous World War II. Inside is the Fort Gate, the sole remnant of the former base.
Those who are interested in history should visit the National Museum of Singapore, which showcases dioramas chronicling the country's history from its humble fishing village origins all the way to its meteoric rise since the arrival of Sir Raffles. There is also the unique Asian Civilizations Museum, a sign of Singapore's diversity in culture that fuses Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Buddhist, and Islamic heritages. One can find displays of Batak wood carvings, Buddha images, Islamic calligraphies, Chinese jade ornaments, jewelry, and a host of other marvelous specimens of cultural or historical heritage.
Cloth-lovers can find their slice of heaven on earth in the form of the Arab Street, featuring strings of shops hawking silk and batik textiles lining every walkway. Not to forget is the nearby Sultan Mosque, which dazzles with its golden dome and minarets, and is also the center of Islam in Singapore.
Perhaps a trip to the City Center would not be complete without going to the district known as Little India, which, as its name suggests, is India in a small package. It teems with Hindu temples and shops but the highlight there, however, is the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. One of the oldest of its kind in Singapore, it has exquisitely-carved gopurum gate that guards its entrance.
