Kushtia may hum with activity but it still remains as one of the most impoverished towns in Bangladesh. Amusement parks that exist in this place hide the desperation of locals to escape poverty. Much of their livelihood depends upon the cotton, textile and pottery industry. Literary and culture buffs, however, will be surprised to know that the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore once lived in Kushtia, in the village of Kuthibari or Shilaidah Kuthibari due to his connection to the Mughals. He once served as a jamidari or zamindar, an official who collects taxes from the peasants. On the side, he was writing furiously, enriching Bengali literature through his poems, short stories and plays. Today Shilaidah Kuthibari is now a museum...
