South Korea's history began upon its establishment in 1948. The great Syngman Rhee declared of its establishment in the now capital, Seoul. From this day, what ensued is what historians consider as a series of periods that change from democratic to autocratic rule. After Rhee's autocratic rule, the republic that seconded was democratic. The third one is also autocratic and the cycle continued. Today, the country is enjoying liberal democracy and swimming in the freedom it entails.
