Yemen was already known in the ancient world in the time of Queen Sheba. The land was surrounded by a sense of mystery and the air of unimaginable wealth and luxury. Hundreds of civilizations have taken place in the land and many tourists flocked Yemen for a couple of reasons. Its mountains, valleys and deserts witness the coming in and out successive civilizations - the Sabaean, Himyarite and Mineans. These three kingdoms all depended for their wealth on the spice trade. Aromatics such as myrrh and frankincense were greatly prized in the ancient civilized world and were used as part of various rituals in many cultures, including Egyptian, Greek and Roman.
The Yemeni tradition and folklore abound with biblical references. While the historical truthfulness of such stories might be questioned, what is certain is that history in Yemen dates from the very dawn of humankind.
