The Buriram Province in the heart of northeastern Thailand is probably one of the few travel unknowns remaining to be discovered in the country. Boasting some of the best collections of Khmer-inspired architecture, its landscape is peppered by over 143 historical ruins. However, its pride ultimately rests on the Phanom Rung Temple cradled at the summit of a now-extinct volcano. Truly, this is a place of wonderful cultural heritage that deserves more than the attention it currently receives.
A territory of the powerful Khmer Empire nearly a thousand years ago, it was only ceded to Thailand during the early part of the 19th century, which is why most of the archaeological sites found there are of Khmer origin. Of all the impressive attractions, the undisputed superstar among them is the Phanom Rung Temple, originally built as a house of worship for the Hindu god Shiva. Now considered as a national park, it sits regally 1,320 feet above the ground, providing a bird's eye view of the lovely scenery below. A landmark symbol, it features prominently in the province's official seal.
Apart from Phanom Rung, however, there are still plenty more to visit and explore. A short distance away, one can find the Wat Khao Angkhan - a Buddhist temple that is the embodiment of architectural styles from numerous influences. There are also the Khao Kradong Forest Park, a nature preserve situated on an extinct volcano which is home to various unique flora; the Nong Hong Sanctuary, a stone fortress featuring a moat and exquisite brick pagodas; the Monument of King Rama I, an effigy tribute to the legendary king who founded the province; and the Kradong Reservoir, - a former water reservoir that now maintains an excellent zoo and is also a wonderful spot for relaxation.
