Myanmar's previous capital Yangon is the colorful masterpiece in the local history. The town is full of old and new buildings standing side-by-side with Buddhist stupas and pagodas: a true fusion of the East and the West. Located in the southern coast of the peninsula, Yangon was the seat of power of British Burma, which eventually changed the city's name to "Rangoon." However, with Myanmar's independence from the English in 1948, Rangoon was changed back to Yangon, kick-starting the local government to bring the city back to its Burmese glory.
Buddhism is the one thing that remains unchanged in the country, especially in Yangon. A must-see for devotees and tourists alike is the Shwedagon Payo that can be seen all over town. Gold-plated on the outside, the majestic pagoda is home to four sacred Buddhist relics. There are other payos around the city, such as the Sule Paya, Kaba Aye, and the Botataung. The pagodas deliver an unforgettable visual experience, glistening bright gold when sunlight touches their exteriors.
Another tourist attraction is the Myanmar Gems Museum and Gems Market, located in Greater Yangon. The gallery displays some of the world's largest and most precious gems, including the biggest sapphire, as well as hefty mounds of jade and ruby. Luckily, there are numerous gem shops all over the place to appease one's hunger for these expensive precious and semi-precious stones. Bogyoke Aung San Market provides travelers a cheaper alternative as stores offer souvenirs, trinkets, and several other exotic things at bargain prices.
