The Glossary
gharry - "an old garishly painted horse-drawn Victorian carriage used as a local transport in Pyin U Lwin, a "British" town in Myanmar."
Botataung Pagoda, when translated literally would mean 1,000 military officers. It has become a famous pagoda in Yangon and is located close to the Yangon river. It is believed that the Mon people were the first to build the pagoda at the same time the Shwedagon Pagoda was constructed about 2,000 or more years ago.
The Botataung Pagoda is hallow inside but it is believed that it houses a sacred relic in the form of a hair strand of Gautama Buddha. During the Second World War, the pagoda was completely destroyed due to bombings by the RAF. It was rebuilt after the war ended.
