Micronesians arrived by canoe to Marshall Islands and started settling there since the 2nd millennium BC.
Spaniard Alonso de Salazar first sighted the islands in 1526, but the islands were named after British Captain John Charles Marshall who visited the country in 1788.
During World War I, the islands were under German control, and later, under Japanese government, which institutionalized Japanese education among the islanders.
During the Second World War, the United States occupied the islands and placed it under American territory. After the war, the US used some of the islands to test nuclear bombs.
In 1979, the local government was officially established and the nation became self-governing.
